A homeowner in Corona Del Mar, California was in need of backyard patio slab repairs. Voids beneath the concrete and uneven slabs posed a serious safety issue to the homeowners family and friends when the patio space was in use. The homeowner wanted a fix that was permanent; however, they did not want a huge expense and disruption during the process. Some options the homeowner considered included removing and replacing the slab panels and mud-jacking to raise the slabs. Removing and replacing the concrete slabs proved to be much too costly and disruptive, not to mention it would take a considerable amount of time for the new concrete slabs to cure before the homeowner could once again enjoy their patio. Mud-jacking was not chosen again due to the time it takes for the mud slurry to cure, and the fact that this option is not a long term permanent solution. Because of these concerns and the fact that the homeowner wanted a non-invasive quick, economical solution, the homeowner decided to continue their search for the prefect solution. The homeowner selected Saber Geotechnical Construction Solutions to resolve the issues with their settling patio slabs. Saber proposed using PolyLEVEL™, to provide a quick, effective, and economical solution for lifting the homeowners patio slabs. PolyLEVEL™ is a two-part urethane that when combined expands into a rigid foam used to fill voids, stabilize slabs and lift concrete. Once injected through small 5/8 inch drilled holes in the surface or slabs, a chemical reaction converts the liquid urethane components into a strong, rapidly setting, waterproof foam material. In it’s foam state, PolyLEVEL™ is light weight, weighing two to six pounds per cubic-foot (pcf). Opposed to mud-jacking which can weigh upwards of 120 pcf, thus adding a significant burden to the supporting soils under the slab, and potentially contributing to further settlement issues. With a compressive strength of 10,800 pounds per square foot, PolyLEVEL™ has the strength to support the most demanding residential loads. For this job, Saber Geotechnical Construction Solutions, installed 357 units of poly urethane and lifted the slab back to it’s original position. Once the job was completed and with PolyLEVEL’s™ quick set time, the homeowner was able to enjoy the patin approximately 20 minutes after installation. The PolyLEVEL™ solution is an economical, clean, efficient, environmentally friendly alternative to other traditional concrete repair options, and can be used both outside and inside of the home.
